Excerpt from the booklet
In 1992 I have released the CD ´Shanghaied on Tor
Road´ (FMP CD 046), and its subtitle was "The
world´s first operetta performed on nothing but the
daxophone". Well, in those days I´ve probably
assumed that this new little toy needed to prove something.
First: that it was a real musical instrument, not just a
party gimmick. Second: that it could properly function in
multi-voiced structures, like a band, or a choir.
It´s about 10 years later now, and a lot of people
have seen and listened to it since - and learned that the
´d´ is not at all a misprinted ´s´.
Also the music of YUXO was exclusively generated on this
little instru-ment (with very few exceptions). But there
was no need to prove something any more: the daxophone comes
by as if it was the most natural thing of the world.
In late 2001 I was commissioned to compose and record some
daxophone music for a new production of the ´Comedy
of Errors´ by William Shakespeare. The piece was directed
by Martin Duncan from London, and performed at the Maxim
Gorki Theatre in Berlin through-out the first half of 2001.
(...)
A few parts of YUXO have more or less emerged from the musical
material of this project. Sometimes just as a theme or a
little sketch, sometimes as an entire song which was refined
and put into a new ambience about one year later. (...)
