Okay
Temiz stands in a class of his own. Born in Turkey, he is
one of the few jazz musicians who seriously challenged accepted
international concepts by developing an indigenous style of
his own derived from and often performed with authentic Turkish
instruments. By virtue of his classical training as a percussionist
and his early background in Turkish folk music, Okay Temiz
was one of the very few Turkish musicians equally at ease
with both Western and Middle Eastern rhythms. Based in Sweden
since the 60´s he has managed to successfully combine
the traditional sounds of Turkish instruments with the spirit
of jazz and improvised music, winning gradually recognition
and respect for the unique musical blend he was offering:
an expert fusion of Turkish folk melodies with Western jazz
improvisation, all spiced with dozens of African and South
American rhythms. All this of course happened years before
the term ´world music´ started gaining credence
in mass culture.
Never lacking in technical brilliance, flair, imagination
and most of all musicianship, his skill and expertise have
made him one of the most respected percussionists on the international
jazz scene today. Okay Temiz gave nearly 3,000 concerts all
over Europe, in the US and India, using his travels to build
up and enhance his considerable collection of ethnic instruments.
Far from being a mere collector, Okay Temiz has actually incorporated
instruments such as the guicca, the berimbau, the talking
drums and the kalimba into his wide array of percussive sounds
- not to mention the ´Electric Pyramid´, his own
self-built sampler.
A few years ago Okay Temiz moved to Finland where the Magnetic
Band album was recorded. The Magnetic Band are Okay´s
latest ensemble, an explosive combination of percussion and
wind instruments switching constantly between jazz and traditional
themes. |

Review
(
) Okay´s music is a fusion of eastern tunes with
salsa, samba, funk, and other foot-stomping, head bopping,
ass-wriggling groovers where ´I´ is never where
one expects but it is felt and it is staggering. |
